Manhattan, located primarily on Manhattan Island at the mouth of the Hudson River, is one of the five boroughs of New York City in New York State, the other boroughs being, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. New York State is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border with Rhode Island east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Ontario to the west, and Quebec to the north. The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata,(island of many hills) as recorded in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon). New York was inhabited by the Algonquin, Iroquois, and Lenape Native Americans at the time the Dutch and French moved into the region in the early 17th century. The region was first claimed by Henry Hudson in 1609 and was colonised by the Dutch in 1624. In 1664, the English conquered the city and renamed it New York after the English Duke of York and Albany the 17th century Duke of York, James Stuart, future King James II and VII of England and Scotland.
