The mission of San Juan Capistrano was first established in East Texas, and originally christened in 1716 as La Misión San José de los Nazonis. The mission made its permanent home on the banks of the San Antonio River in 1731. San Juan Capistrano was founded by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order.
