Tower of the Americas in HemisFair Park, San Antonio, Texas is a 750 foot (229 metre) observation tower, designed by architects Ford Powell & Carson, Inc., and was built as the theme structure of the 1968 World's Fair, HemisFair '68. The fair celebrated San Antonio's 250th anniversary. The tower weighs 80 million pounds, and has 952 steps to get to the top. The "top house" (the round revolving structure at the top of the tower), is 76 feet tall. The height of the concrete shaft (which is partially hidden inside the top house), is 605 feet tall. Construction of the tower began on August 9, 1966 and was completed in approximately 18 months, in time for the opening ceremonies for the fair held on April 6, 1968. The San Antonio Tower of the Americas was the tallest observation tower in the United States from 1968 until 1996, when the Las Vegas Stratosphere Tower was completed.
