The town and port of St Ives is located on the northern edge of the Lands End Peninsula on the Irish sea coast of Cornwall and is situated north of Penzance and west of Camborne. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. The origin of St Ives is attributed in legend to the arrival of the Irish Saint Ia of Cornwall, in the 5th century. The parish church in St Ives still bears the name of this saint, and the name St Ives itself derives from it. Formerly St Ives was heavily dependent on fishing and was home to over 400 pilchard fishing boats, as well as, handling the export of stone, tin and copper, and the import of the coal, to power the large beam engines of the local mines. The decline in fishing caused a shift in commercial emphasis and the town is now primarily a holiday resort. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. The Great Western Railway company established the St Ives Bay branch line from St Erth in 1877 which brought a new generation of Victorian seaside holidaymakers.
