St Michael's Mount, originally a Benedictine Priory from the 12th century, is a tidal island situated off the town of Marazion in Mount's Bay off the coast of Cornwall. The castle on the rock dates from the 14th Century. Historically, St Michael's Mount was a Cornish counterpart of Mont Saint Michel in Normandy, France, when it was given to the Benedictines thereligious order of Mont Saint-Michel by Edward the Confessor in the 11th century. St Michaels Mount was a priory of the abbey of Mont Saint Michel until the dissolution of the alien houses by Henry V, when it was given to the abbess and Convent of Syon at Isleworth, Middlesex. Colonel John St Aubyn acquired the mount in 1659 and Lord St Levan, his descendent, continues to be the tenant of the Mount but has ceased to be resident there. The St Aubyn family donated the castle and its grounds to the National Trust in 1954. In 2004 James St Aubyn, took up residency and management of the Mount. |
