Anvil Point Lighthouse is situated within the grounds of Durlston Country Park, approximately 2 miles up the hill from Swanage Bay and Swanage town centre.
Anvil Point lighthouse was built from local stone and completed in 1881. The lighthouse was opened by Neville Chamberlain's father, then Minister of Transport. The light is positioned to give a waypoint for vessels on passage along the English Channel coast. To the west it gives a clear line from Portland Bill and to the east guides vessels away from the Christchurch Ledge and leads them into the Solent. The lighthouse has a height of 45 metres above mean high water, was electrified in 1960 and automated in 1991. The lamp has an intensity of 60,000 candela and a range of 19 nautical miles.
