Old Harry Rocks at Handfast Point, located directly east of Studland, are a small but characteristic set of coastal landforms off Ballard Down at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast world heritage site near Swanage in Dorset. The rocks are situated in the English Channel where the Purbeck Hills fall into the sea. Old Harry is where the cliffs broke and divided when the Isle of Wight was formed millions of years ago. The same bright white cliffs are what you see as The Needles some few miles away across The Solent. Old Harry Rocks is named after the Poole pirate Privateer Harry Paye, plunderer of ships on Poole's Jurassic Coast during the 15th Century who used to store his contraband nearby. Old Harry's Wife used to stand next to him but collapsed over fifty years ago and now can only be seen at very low tides.
