Battlesbridge in Essex is a small rural settlement on the upper estuary of the River Crouch, situated partly within Chelmsford Borough and partly within Rochford District. Battlesbridge is just off the A130 on the banks of the River Crouch, midway between Chelmsford and Southend. Battlesbridge is located at the tidal limit of the river, where it forms an important crossing point. Battlesbridge is named after the Bataille family who were landowners in the Middle Ages. The history of Battlesbridge is intimately linked with the river, and its present appearance owes much to centuries of riverside industry. Today Battlesbridge is best known as a centre for antiques and collectables. The Battlesbridge Antiques Centre comprises of five period buildings: Cromwell House, The Bridgebarn, The Haybarn, The Old Granary and Muggeridge Farm, and also houses 80 dealers offering advice, valuations and opinions. Battlesbridge Antiques Centre is a member of the Essex Tourism Association. The Tidal Gates at Battlesbridge were replaced in 2008. The new gates weighing 19 tonnes, were constructed using pine beams and metal sluices. The basic work was completed by Roy Hart and his son Justin. Woodham Ferrers engineers the Keeble brothers, assisted with some of the more specialised milling. The village is served by Battlesbridge railway station on the Crouch Valley Line. A direct train line to this village is also run from London Liverpool Street Station |
