Mountnessing Windmill is a weatherboarded post mill built in 1807 with a single-storey sixteen-sided roundhouse in the village of Mountnessing (Roman Road) in south Essex situated to the north-east of Brentwood, south-west of Ingatestone. Mountnessing Windmill replaced an earlier mill and there are records of a windmill here since 1477. The mill was built and operated by the Agnis family continuously from 1807 to 1924, and again briefly 1932-3. In 1937, ownership of the mill passed from the Blencowe Estates to Mountnessing Parish Council. It was repaired as a memorial to King George VI, whose coronation was in that year. The mill was restored to working order between 1979 and 1983. In 1947 the mill was given Grade II listed building status. A few years later a lighting strike damaged one sail and the building sank towards dereliction. The Friends of Mountnessing Windmill was formed in 1975 and a restoration project began in 1979 which lasted four years. A complete new roof was fitted, and the tail of the mill rebuilt. The internal machinery was rebuilt by Peter Stenning and Richard Seago. The mill was officially opened by Hervey Benham (1910-1987) on 13 November 1983. The windmill was opened to the public in April 1984.
