The 170m high Spinnaker Tower (opened 2005), has been built within Gunwharf Quays, beside the city's world-famous historic dockyard. The view also shows HMS Warrior 1860 which was the world’s first iron-hulled, armoured warship powered by steam as well as sail and constructed of wrought iron. When HMS Warrior was originally built she was bigger, faster and more heavily armed than any other warship afloat. The only surviving member of Queen Victoria's Black Battle Fleet, HMS Warrior was used for 50 years as an oil jetty at Milford Haven before being returned to Portsmouth in 1987 where she was fully restored to her Victorian glory. The upper rigging of the Royal Navy's most famous warship HMS Victory can be seen on the left. HMS Victory is the world's oldest commissioned ship and is one of the most famous warships ever built (between 1759-1765). In 1805, Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson on board his flagship, HMS Victory, led 27 British ships into battle off Cape Trafalgar against a much larger combined French and Spanish fleet. The British won a great victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. Nelson was struck by a single bullet as he paced the quarterdeck and with his captain, Thomas Hardy, he survived just long enough to learn the outcome of the battle.
