Winchester Cathedral in Hampshire is so named because it houses the throne (or ‘cathedra’) of the Bishop of Winchester. The cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Winchester, which is part of the Church of England. The Cathedral has its origins in the 7th century, when a Christian Church was first built on this site. The cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in England, with the longest nave and overall length of any Gothic cathedral in Europe. Winchester Cathedral is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Swithun.
