Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Co Ltd, licensed common brewers, registered office at 91 Brick Lane, London E1 in the Spitalfields area, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Brewing on the site can be traced back to 1666 when Joseph Truman joined William Bucknall's Brewhouse in Brick Lane. Truman became manager in 1697. Sir Benjamin Truman joined the firm in 1722 and the business expanded rapidly over the following 200 years. In 1789, the brewery was taken over by Sampson Hanbury. Thomas Fowell Buxton, joined the company in 1808, improved the brewing process and converted the works to steam power. The Black Eagle Brewery was constructed in the early 18th century. In 1835 Buxton took over the business upon Hanbury's death. In 1873 the company acquired Phillips brewery in Burton upon Trent and built a major new brewery, named the Black Eagle after the original London site. The Old Truman brewery buildings still stand in Brick Lane, where they have become home to an arts and events centre with various shops and bars |
