Bolton Castle, a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument, is situated in Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales near the town of Castle Bolton which takes its name from the castle. The castle was built, in a quadrangular style, between 1378 and 1399 by Sir Richard Le Scrope, Richard II's Lord Chancellor of England and 1st Lord Scrope of Bolton who supported the house of York in the Wars of the Roses. Lord Scrope employed John Lewyn, a master mason, who had also worked on the great castles of Dunstanburgh and Raby. Bolton Castle was besieged by Cromwell's troops during the English Civil War, After more than a year the castle was finally taken by the Parliamentarians in 1645. Mary, Queen of Scots’ was imprisonment in the castle 1569. The castle remains in the private ownership of Lord Bolton, Sir Richard le Scrope’s direct descendant. Several movies and television productions have used the site as a location including Ivanhoe, Elizabeth, Heartbeat, and All Creatures Great and Small. |
