Banyuls-sur-Mer (Banyuls de la Marenda in Catalan) is a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of the Languedoc-Roussillon region on the Côte Vermeille where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean in southern France. Banyuls-sur-Mer lies just north of the border between France and Spain in the Catalan region. Banyuls-sur-Mer has one of the oldest aquariums in France located at the Arago Laboratory, a centre for marine biology research. Banyuls-sur-Mer is probably best known in the region for the production of the Banyuls wine, a generally sweet wine, drunk as an apéritif or as a dessert wine. Neighbouring towns are Cerbère, Port-Vendres, Argelès-sur-Mer and Collioure. |
