The Galamus's Gorges which have been carved into the cliffs by the fast flowing Agly River from the Pech de Bugarach in the Corbières mountains, lie 3 miles north of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, a commune in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of the region of Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France. Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet is twinned with the town of Ennis in the Republic of Ireland. The natural grottos of Galamus, "the holy mount", have been a refuge for hermits since the seventh century. The hermits built their cells and lived in prayer and abstinence. They placed the site under the protection of Saint Anthony the Great, the patriarch of the monks of the desert. The Franciscans fitted out the hermitage in the 15th century. Thanks to the exceptional situation of the Hermitage, hung up half-way up the cliff, the place was the setting of several films: "Chine ma douleur" - Jean Vigo Prize 1989 and "The 9th Door" by Roman Polanski in 1998. Close by are the stunning Cathar Castles the “five sons of Carcassonne”, Termes, Aguilar, Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens and Quéribus.
