The Trocadéro, site of the Palais de Chaillot, is an
area of Paris, in the 16th arrondissement, across the Seine from
the Eiffel Tower. The hill of the Trocadéro is the hill
of Chaillot, a former village. The Trocadéro is laid in
a semi-circle facing the the wings of the Palais de Chaillot and
beyond that, in a direct line, the Eiffel Tower. Named after an
Andalusian fort occupied by the French in 1823, it was not given
its present shape until 1858, when a first Palais de Chaillot was
built. The 1937 Exposition Internationale replaced the palace with
the present monumental buildings which house several museums. |
