Doolin is a small seaside village on the northwest coast of County Clare. Doolin, set against the rugged Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by the spectacular bare limestone landscape of the Burren, is situated 8km from the famous Cliffs of Moher, 6km from Lisdoonvarna spa town, 50km from Shannon Airport and 70km from Galway City. Doolin is one of three places (Galway and the village of Rossaveal on the northwest shore of Galway Bay are the others) with ferry services to the Aran Islands. The Aille River runs from the hills of the Burren down past Doolin to meet the sea. Doolin is one of the most famous Irish traditional music centres in Ireland. Over the years pubs such as O'Connors, McGanns and McDermotts have held some of the best Irish music sessions to be found anywhere. This probably started in earnest in the 1960s when the Russell Brothers, Micho, Pakie and Gussie played a major role in putting Doolin on the music map. The small Crab Island is a short distance out from Doolin Harbor, barren except for the remains of a 19th century stone constabulary outpost. |
