Roundstone is a village in Connemara, Co. Galway on the west coast of Ireland and lies on the western arm of Bertraghboy bay, 48 miles (77 km) north-west of Galway city. Roundstone village was built in the 1820s by Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo. The bay was referred to as Round-stone Haven as early as 1684. 2 miles from Roundstone, on the road to Ballyconneely, are located two of the finest beaches in Ireland. Gurteen Beach and Dog’s Bay lie back to back and form a Tom bolo jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean. Gurteen Beach is the larger of the two and the closer to Roundstone. Dog’s Bay (or Port na Fadoige in Irish meaning Bay of Plovers) faces due west and is famous for its Foraminiferal Sands which are made of millions of microscopic shells. Errisbeg Mountain (298metres) is located to the west of Roundstone Village. It is the only significant hill along this section of Coastline. Located North East of Roundstone village, the twelve Pins (or Bens) are a group of small mountains that are the dominant feature of the Connemara countryside. Alcock and Brown, the first nonstop transatlantic fliers, crash landed in the blanket bog between Roundstone and Clifden. |
