Garrykennedy, in north Tipperary (Tiobraid Árann) is a town and harbour situated on the eastern shore of Lough Derg which is the third-largest lake (or lough) in Ireland (after Lough Neagh and Lough Corrib) and the second-largest in the Republic of Ireland.) Garrykennedy is situated 3.2km (2ml) off the Nenagh to Portroe lake drive road. Garrykennedy was a stronghold of the O'Kennedys who built a castle here. The harbour was constructed in 1829, using stone from the old castle, some of the tower still stands beside a jetty. It was used to transport slate from the local quarries. The closest airport is Shannon, located 45.0 km south west of Garrykennedy. Up to the 1950s, Garrykennedy was a busy port with regular visits by the Guinness barges delivering barrels of stout. In recent years it has been developed to cater for increased cruiser traffic and the needs of other visitors.
