The Grand Canal (Italian: Canal Grande, Venetian: Canałasso) forms the principal traffic artery in the city of Venice. The Grand Canal is 3.8 km (2.33miles long), with an average breadth of 70 metres (77 yards) and a depth of 5 metres (16 feet). The canal starts from the lagoon near Santa Lucia railway station, traverses the city from north-west to south-east in a reversed S-curve through the central districts ("sestieri") of Venice, and the other end leads into Saint Mark Basin.
The 17th-century baroque Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute (Church of the Virgin Mary of Good Health) designed Baldassare Longhena and generally referred to as "La Salute” was built 1631-1681 and is situated almost directly across from the Piazza San Marco, where the Grand Canal empties into the lagoon. The church was dedicated to the Madonna in gratitude for the end of an outbreak of plague in Venice (the name means St. Mary of the Health).
