Highland cattle or kyloe are a Scottish breed of beef cattle with long horns and long wavy pelts which are coloured black, red, yellow, brindled or dun. Their winter coat is thick and double layered - a soft shorter woolly underlayer for insulation, and a smooth longer outer coat, to shed the rain. The highland breed of cattle has a long and distinguished ancestry. The highlander breed developed in the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland and was developed from two sets of stock, one originally black, and the other reddish. Written records go back to the 18th century and the Highland Cattle Herd Book, first published in 1885, lists pedigrees since that time. |
