Oban is the largest town between Helensburgh and Fort William in the Firth of Lorn within the Argyll and Bute council area of Scotland. Oban Bay ("The Gateway to the Isles") is a near perfect horseshoe shape and is protected by the island of Kerrera. Beyond Kerrera is Mull and to the north of Oban is the long low island of Lismore, and the mountains of Morvern and Ardgour. The modern town of Oban grew up around the distillery that was founded there in 1794. The folly McCaig's Tower dominates the town's skyline. Oban (An t-Òban in Scottish Gaelic) means The Little Bay. |
