Tobermory (Scottish Gaelic: Tobar Mhoire) is the capital of
and the only burgh on the Isle of Mull, Argyll and Bute, Inner Hebrides, Scotland. Tobermory is located
in the northeastern part of Isle of Mull, near the northern entrance
of the Sound of Mull. The Isle of Mull is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides in the council area of Argyll and Bute. The town of Tobermory was founded as a fishing port
in 1788 on a layout designed by Dumfriesshire engineer Thomas
Telford. The name Tobermory is derived from the Gaelic Tobar
Mhoire, meaning "Mary's well". The name refers to a
well located nearby which was dedicated in ancient times to the
Virgin Mary. |
