Estepona is a town and municipality in the region of the Costa
del Sol Andalucia, surrounded by the sea and Sierra Bermeja mountains in
southern Spain. Estepona is located in the province of Málaga,
part of the autonomous community of Andalusia. Estepona has been
occupied by the Phoenicians, the Romans and the Moors. In 1456
Estepona was reclaimed by Spain from the moors. One year later
King Henry V of Castile re-conquered the town and started building
the Castle of San Luis. In 1474 Henry IV ordered the building
of the “Torre del Reloj”, also known as the Clock
Tower. The church of La Virgen de Los Remedios
is a perfect blend between Latin American architecture
and Rococo. Between
1725 and 1766 the church was used by Franciscan fathers
as a monastery. Estepona is renowned for its beaches, which stretch
along some 21 km of coastline. It is a popular resort and holiday
destination. Estepona has an active fishing port, with daily
auctions for a wide variety of seafood. |
