Frigiliana, Frigliana or Fragliana, as it is spelt on the tiles in the village is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the Autonomous Community of Andalucia. Frigiliana is situated in the foothills of the Almijara mountain range high in the Sierra Tejeda with views of the Higueron River which lies in the Chillar Valley, about 7 km inland of Nerja and 56 kilometres from the provincial capital. The history of the village of Frigliana is pictured in 12 mosaics in the old quarter, created by Pilar Garcia Millan. A fierce battle was fought in Frigiliana during the Alpujarran rebellion of 1568 which extended throughout a large part of southern Andalucía. Nearly 4,000 Moriscos (Arabs who had been baptised Christians) unsuccessfully defended the castle against almost equal numbers of Catholic infantry and cavalry. El Fuerte, the hill that climbs above the village, was the scene of the final bloody defeat of the Moors of La Axarquía in their 1569 rebellion. The local agriculture is olive oil and dried figs, Moscatel wine and honey. |
