Castillo de la Herradura is an 18th century gun battery in La Herradura about 100 metres from the Paseo Marítimo de Andrés Segovia, a promenade which stretches the full length of the bay of La Herradura. Herradura is the second-largest urban area of Almuñecar, on the Costa Tropical coast of Granada province in the Spanish Autonomous Region of Andalusia. Though called a castle, this defensive fortification is really a gun battery built around 1768 to defend the bay. Castillo de la Herradura originally had four cannons and a contingent of 27 men, including gunners, infantry and cavalrymen. By 1830 it was only manned by five guards and more recently it was home to the local Guardia Civil. Castillo de la Herradura is now under control of the municipal government and being restored for use as a cultural centre. |
