The Illes Medes (Catalan) or Islas Medas (Spanish) is a small group of uninhabited islands a kilometre off shore east of the coastal town of L'Estartit and seaside resort on the Costa Brava which is situated between the foothills of the Montgrí Massif and the Mediterranean Sea, and is part of the borough of Torroella de Montgrí, in the Baix Empordà county, Girona province, autonomous community of Catalonia. The largest island is Meda Gran second largest island is Meda Xica. Other islands include Carall (or Cavall) Bernat, Tascons Grossos, Medellot, Tascons Petits and Ferrenelles. The Illes Medes were declared a protected area by the Catalan Autonomous Government in 1983. L'Estartit stretches from Cala Montgó, at the southern tip of the Bay of Roses (Badía de Roses) to the Ter River estuary in the Bay of Pals (Badía de Pals). Inland from L’Estartit lie the hills of Roca Maura and Torre Moratxa.
