The Plaza de Toros in Valencia is one of the largest bullrings in Spain and t lies next to the train station, Estacio del Nord, at Calle de Xátiva 28. The Bullring is a neoclassic building design by Sebastián Monleón who used a Roman amphitheater in Nimes as his inspiration, built in the mid-19th century between 1850-1860, of 18 metres high and the ring has a diameter of 52 metres. The Plaza de Toros is an impressive structure in the style of a Roman Coliseum but employing Doric ornament (the traditional Ancient Greek style). With only the ring itself measuring 52 m in diameter, it is much larger as a whole, with 4 levels of colonnades and ballustrades. It is possibly the first building in the city to use exposed iron, particularly in the columns that hold the steps. When it was built, the bullring had a capacity for 16,800 people, a number in accordance with the huge passion for bullfighting at that time in Valencia. Next to the bull ring is The Bullfighting Museum with a collection of memorabilia of this ancient sport. Founded in 1929, it is one of the oldest and most important in Spain, and has historical objects from the XVIII, XIX, and XX centuries. t is conceived as a space for promotion and investigation of the art of bullfighting. The main bullfights take place during Fallas (March) and at the July Fair. |
