The Sanctuary of the Virgen
del Castillo lies within
the grounds of an 13th century castle which is joined to the Santa
Ana chapel and the Moorish queen’s tower (the Torre de la
Reina Mora) and sits on the mountain called Muntanya de l'Or (Mountain
of Gold), also known as Les Rabosses, a solitary rock spur above
the town of Cullera near the mouth of the Júcar (Xùquer)
river. The
Sanctuary may be accessed by road but there is also a pathway known
as the calvario. The Virgen de Castillo is the patron of
Cullera whose festival is celebrated the week after Passover. The
castle was built over an old Moorish fortress which was once walled
although those walls no longer remain. Located there are
the rest of the old towers forming part of the old walled area
of the mountain. |
