Mount Teide, at the geographical centre of the Canary Islands, Islas Canarias, is Spain's highest peak reaching 3718 metres above sea level and the highest point in the Atlantic Ocean. Mount Teide, Pico del Teide in Spanish, is an active strato-volcano which last erupted in 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the Santiago (northwestern) rift. Teide, the third largest volcano in the world, and its surroundings comprise Teide National Park which was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2007. |
